Tll Yahda Energy’s first foray into renewable energy supply is a solar farm located in the Village of Masset on Haida Gwaii, known as ‘Solar North’. Solar was selected as the power source for this first project because it is proven technology that could be safely integrated into the grid. As the first renewable power project in BC’s non-integrated area (NIA), TYE needed to work closely with BC Hydro throughout the planning and commissioning of Solar North.
Solar North has a 2MW capacity and is located on the grounds of the Masset Airport, with solar panels covering an area of 11 acres on the west side of the runway. Construction took 4 years; Solar North began producing power in December 2025. We estimate that the solar power produced will save 580K litres of diesel annually.

BC Hydro is working towards adding a BESS to the solar farm system, to be able to integrate more solar power into the North grid. The estimated
timeline for completion is 2028.

TYE is working towards adding more panels to the site, increasing productivity. With the expansion the total production of Solar North will double.
We hope to start construction in the next year.

With the experience and connections we have made over the course of the Solar North project, we are planning to start planning for a project to reduce diesel on the South Grid.

TYE supports energy work across Haida Gwaii, working closely with energy staff in HlG̱aagilda Skidegate and
G̱aw Tlagée Old Massett on energy efficiency and community solar panel projects.

TYE has partnered with Swiilawiid Sustainability Society and the Xaadáa Gwáay Renewable Energy Co-operative to support projects in the community.

TYE works with businesses in the energy field on Haida Gwaii such as supporting Yourbrook Energy’s development of tidal power technology.

TYE is aiming to support people and businesses on Haida Gwaii by training Haida people during Solar North construction, funding electrical apprenticeships for solar farm operation and accessing contracts with local businesses for grid upgrade work on-island.
