What’s Our Story?

Tll Yahda Energy (TYE) is a partnership between Skidegate Band Council, Old Massett Village Council and Council of the Haida Nation. TYE's board of directors is made up of representatives from each entity.

Tll yahda means ‘making it right’ in xaad kil (Massett Haida language dialect) and xaayda kil (Skidegate Haida language dialect). TYE’s primary goal is to replace diesel power generation by renewable power options for Haida Gwaii.

Participating in energy sovereignty through business.

Haida Gwaii’s Electricity Profile

Haida Gwaii is divided into two grids- the North Grid powers G̱aw Tlagée Old Massett, Masset,  Taaw Tldáaw Tow Hill,

‘Wáan Kún Port Clements and everywhere in between. The South Grid powers K'il Kun Sandspit, Daajing Giids, HlGaagilda Skidegate and communities north all the way to Tll.aal Tlell.

The North Grid is completely powered by diesel fuel, while the South Grid runs on a combination of diesel and hydro-electric power from Moresby Lake Generating Station.

Haida Gwaii’s grids are part of BC Hydro’s “non-integrated area” (NIA), the small and remote communities in BC that are not connected to the major provincial grid on the mainland. These communities are largely indigenous and almost all run diesel generators for electricity. TYE’s Solar North project is the first renewable project in the NIA and has helped pave the way for other Nations and communities in BC.

[Stat on diesel burned confirm] Haida Gwaii burns 55% of the diesel used for electricity in the province.

Future power needs for Haida Gwaii are predicted to steadily increase over the next 25 years, as outlined in BC Hydro’s 2026 Load Forecast Report.
